I am just trying to drive less, but in the hot summer season, walking just isn%26#039;t an option. I do like the idea of companies changing their workdays to 4 days instead of 5 or 6. On the other hand, it will make things inconvenient on days where people have off to actually do things, so who knows what will happen.

Why do people keep driving over the speed limit when gas is expensive?

I%26#039;ve tried to save gas by keeping the speed under 60miles p/h

but the majority of locals keep driving over 70 miles p/h

on the 65 speed limit freeways. What really sucks is that these cars sort of push you to their speed.
Why do people keep driving over the speed limit when gas is expensive?
a) they are retarded,

or

b) they are rich retards
Why do people keep driving over the speed limit when gas is expensive?
Because they are Americans that%26#039;s why! And it%26#039;s our right by birth to burn all the gas we can pay for. It was not the majority that created this mess, it was the hand full of do gooder jerks that created it. Open Alaske drope $1.43 ca gallon, open the the FL gulf coast it drope anoth $2.20 a gallon. Want to see $10.00 a gallon elect Obama.
Reply:I%26#039;ve noticed this too %26amp; have also tried doing the same thing, such as using cruise control in town, but it%26#039;s not really safe, is it?! Most of the problem is force of habit, esp. in the South where everyone drives like important jerks. Hey, I grew up in this driving environment %26amp; have tended to drive like this most of my driving life. But then I lived up in the Midwest for a few years, %26amp; people just do NOT tend to drive nearly as aggressive or fast. It%26#039;s gonna be hard to change this behavior, but I%26#039;ve been waiting to see if maybe these gas prices will make people change their mind... so far I%26#039;m seeing little change. Aside from a smaller vehicle, I%26#039;m already thinking of getting one of those new gas gadgets that help you monitor your speed. They look like they kinda work similar to a radar detector.

Otherwise, I guess all we can do is just stay out of the speeders%26#039; way %26amp; just try to drive slower! I%26#039;ve also noticed they%26#039;re NOT just the expensive vehicle driving types, there are plenty of non-rich fast driving idiots out there, so that previous statement about them being rich is inaccurate.
Reply:Doing 70 instead of 65 won%26#039;t make a significant difference to fuel usage. Do 10 MPH if you want real figures. But won%26#039;t you be abused then! Drive at the same speed as the majority of traffic before there is an accident. You can%26#039;t be %26quot;pushed%26quot; to their speed, their option is to overtake you, make it easy, don%26#039;t travel too slow!

That%26#039;s when the problems really start, when vehicles change lanes to overtake, after they are forced to slow down by someone travelling slow. They then can obstruct the driver doing 70 already, a dangerous situation all round. Even for you, stubbornly sticking below a speed limit.

It%26#039;s called self- preservation. Make things equal, so far as possible.

Lowriders!!! I hate driving (b/c of these stupid maniacs)
Would it drive you crazy when (when driving)?
I have driven 18 wheelers for 10+ years. I know exactly what you are talking about. And I almost always do the exact same thing. It helps traffic to move along by merging earlier rather than waiting till the last second and shooting in...I guess I feel a lot safer doing it while the other cars are 60 feet behind me. And yes people are crazy behind the wheel.
Would it drive you crazy when (when driving)?
yep, I suspect everyone who has driven has experienced this selfish behavior. These people are cut from the same cloth as those who dash through intersections or continue with a left turn in front of traffic even after their light has turned red. It makes a person want to drive a tank just to teach them their lesson.

edit: yep, I figured you%26#039;d get one of them to reply.
Reply:I don%26#039;t quite understand what scenario this is... like... The right lane is ending, you%26#039;re in the lane next to the ending-lane so traffic is trying to merge with you and you%26#039;re ticked that people are going right to the very end of the ending lane before merging?

That is okay with me, I think it%26#039;s expected. It ticks me off to see people trying to merge earlier because they have to slow right down to merge, and chances are its heavy traffic in the ending lane as well, so it gets backed up to the point that the traffic light is green, but people can%26#039;t go through. Use the whole of the ending lane so that people way at the back of the ending lane can keep moving.

Or do you mean you%26#039;re trying to exit the highway, and people keep cutting infront of you? Regular gas is at $4.83/gal already, i put premium in one of my cars and it costs $5/gal. So to answer your question which regular gas reach $5? yes it will. In fact i%26#039;ve already seen it at some stations, REGULAR for $5 a gallon. In my area it will probably be up to $5 for regular in the next 2 weeks. It%26#039;s about a 10 cent increase every week here.

$5 a gallon will probably come to your area sooner or later. It%26#039;s basically here for us Southern Cali residents.

I already notice my usually packed socal commutes are becoming less packed because more people are now in the car pool lanes car pooling with cars full of people. There%26#039;s more people waiting at the bus stop around the corner of my street too.
Reply:I paid 4.55/gal this morning...self serve. I live in California. Where I live (Central Valley) Full service is RARE!!
Reply:I live in British Columbia, Canada. Due to the price of %26quot;Regular 87 Octane%26quot; gas elevating to $1.39 per liter (4.3 litres to a U.S. gallon), so $5.97 per U.S. Gallon, we have decided NOT to drive our 1957 Chevrolet BelAir Nomad Wagon with a 383 Stroker Engine and 4 barrel carb. on a 3,000 mile trip. We have to stop every two hours of highway driving to fill up, so that would cost a LOT of money, don%26#039;t you think?

Here in British Columbia, Canada, we have to pay for gas before filling up due to criminal activity........normal I suppose these days.....

I plan ahead now, making one trip instead of 3 or 4. It takes more organization and efficiency to save $$$ at the pump, but I think many have decided to

.....take public transit where possible.

.....ride a bike or walk instead of driving.

.....plan an efficient and organized shopping route and go fewer times to the mall.

.....omit that Sunday drive.........which used to be a tradition.....

.....think twice about travelling on planes, in vehicles, in general.

I flew to Ontario to visit family last October and rented an S.U.V.................this year I will be visiting fewer family members or have them all at one location, and rent a smaller and more fuel efficient vehicle. Sometimes, though, you just have to spend the extra $$$ to do those important things.

I saw an all electric scooter a few weeks ago....very quiet, and you plug it in to recharge it...........that%26#039;s very COOL!
Reply:I%26#039;m from Tennessee, living at Fort Campbell which stradles the border of Tennessee and Kentucky. Lately I%26#039;ve been paying around the high $3.80s...

If I weren%26#039;t almost 8 months pregnant, I%26#039;d be walking for sure! Plus I also live an hour from my friends, family and church, so I can%26#039;t really go without driving.

I%26#039;m just dreading the prices over the next few months. I just feel like it%26#039;s getting so out of hand, but I don%26#039;t know what I can do to change it.

And I only know of 1 full service station in the Nashville area where I do a lot of driving to. I%26#039;d definitely choose that option if there were more around here.
Reply:I live in Australia.

I used to manage a driveway service fuel station.

We had to close down, as we couldnt compete with the larger fuel stations.

Every fuel station in our town is now affiliated with a Supermarket, or ran by a Supermarket and offer discounts. The most common one is Woolworths, who offer you 4c a litre discount on fuel when you spend over $50 at their supermarket, but the other supermarkets, Coles, Bilo and IGA/Richies have similar deals with other service stations.

There is a small service station next door to a Woolworths service station, who offers full driveway service and is usally the same price, and often cheaper, however people line up at Woolworths for their %26#039;discount%26#039;

There was one instance when the independant servo was 5c a liter cheaper than Woolworths, and within 30mins, Woolies dropped their price to be cheaper than him.

We%26#039;re currently paying around $1.50 - $1.60 per liter, which is around $5.50 - $6.00 per gallon.
Reply:%26quot;Americans should NEVER have to pay MORE than $2 a gallon for gas!!!%26quot;

----President George Bush, Sr. 1988.

How come gas stations advertise their prices to the tenth of a cent? Maybe in England, but not here in America. Gasoline goes up by only $1 - $1.50 max year after year. A $2 increase would be a big difference. If gas went up to $11 a gallon by January the U.S. economy would be ruined, pretty much all the middle class would not be able to afford gasoline. $11 An hour is more than many people make in an hour. Since the Middle class makes up the majority, it will never happen. If gas ever gets up to $11 a gallon, we%26#039;ll see a rapid change in the cars we drive. Nobody would be driving a gasoline powered car, everyone would be driving a fuel cell/hydrogen car or a hybrid at the least. I don%26#039;t see that shift happening in the next 6 months. Gasoline maybe at $6-7 a gallon by Jan, but not $11. Many people are writing absurd things, like how gas is gonna be $11 a gallon by next summer, or in your case Jan., it won%26#039;t happen, if it did we would all be really screwed. I know i would only be to afford only 1 of our 4 cars if gas was $11.

Gas prices are already at or near $11 in England, but its doable there because there Is a vast public transportation system and subways all over the country. in America we don%26#039;t really have much besides buses, that wouldn%26#039;t be that good though. Nobody would really be able to get around if gas was $11 here.
Did you know...?
At the rate that oil is going, I can see gasoline at $10 to $15 dollars a gallon.
Reply:another hand ringer are you? either it will or wont.no sense worrying

What bus stops does the 163 njtransit bus make near Hackensack?

I%26#039;m looking at apartments on Prospect Avenue and I know the 162 bus goes express to NY, but doesnt run all the time. It%26#039;s getting ridiculous.?
the only way to lower gas prices is for us all to get together and agree to stop buying gas for as long as it takes for the price to go down ..guess we will keep paying high prices because in america we want what we want NOW..so we pay the price...
Reply:Yeah, there%26#039;s 2 ways. Stop using it, or drill our own oil. None of which are going to happen, many people are going to use gas until the day it renders them broke because its a necessity. And as far as drilling your own oil, well thats highly unlikely unless your really rich, in which case you don%26#039;t care for gas prices anyways. So basically, we are stuck paying high gas prices until the middle class can just no longer afford it anymore and demand deeply declines.
Reply:Lets hope that this isn%26#039;t another one of those artificial gas shortages like the ones back in the 70s.
Reply:Only if we stop worrying about the polar bears and drill in our own country.
Reply:Yes there 100 Senator and 435 reps in the House that don%26#039;t know a F---ING thing about producing and drop of fuel and these IDOTS are in charge of our U.S. Engery Policy!!!!

VOTE THESE idots out!! and let the oil companies drill in the Gulf.. off the coast of Cal.. Simple supply and demand.

So, would you agree to gas rationing if it would lower the price of gas by $2 a gallon? By $1 a gallon?
Gas rationing the answer?
I would say to you FLAT TAX.

Or VAT.

So the government could soak up all of those billions and still hit us some more for a 1.00 pack of cigs,

or a $5.00 jug of Bourbon.

Gasoline is not the answer, cars have been running off of this stuff since , since, lets say 1910.

After 100 years I can buy all kinds of cool I-Pod stuff ( ETC, ETC ) but gasoline has only gotten lower and lower in potency.

The higher the potency of gasoline the better millage I can get from it.

Lets spend some more monies on E-85 so my millage per tank goes down 50%.

Oh you bet that helps the mandate, makes the policy makers look good, ( for a year ) .

So now that ( I think it was Toyota ) anounced the double milage fuel-cell ( 500 ) miles, all of the investors in alcoholl plants are most likely running for the alternet stocks.

As soon as bitchen battery technology hits the market, you will see fossil fuel vehicles go exticent.

If it is like the projected gains in compurtor techonogy, battery tech. can olny be about two years away.
Gas rationing the answer?
we don%26#039;t have a shortage of gas that is just what they want you to think so they can make us pay so damn much for it
Reply:No. most gas is used by semi%26#039;s trucking goods you use. We should not ration because we are a capitolist nation not comunists.
Reply:This was tried in the U S during the Carter years. It does NOT work, only makes things worse. We need to drill and refine our own oil until a better fuel is developed or discovered that does not make the cost of food go up.
Reply:How about a horsepower tax?

Or reinstate the 55mph speed limit to get more scooters on the freeway?
Reply:Bomb the middle east until they falter and we have COMPLETE control of this precious resource. they can%26#039;t handle the responsibilty so we must step in and take charge of this situation. While we%26#039;re at it, those Canadians have been jacking up the Maple Syrup cost on us for years... NO MORE SAP TAXES!!!
Reply:how about for the people who live in the middle of nowhere and have to drive long distances for work? i live in north dakota where it can snow up to 3 feet of snow at a time, where %26quot;gas guzzlers%26quot; are a necessity if you want to get anywhere. my home town had a population of less than 150 people, and we had to drive 45 miles one way to get to the nearest grocery stores/hospitals/ etc.
Reply:My sister drives a big SUV do to th fact she as a large family. She neveruse it unless everyone is gong. t would take four cars to get any where. hich should se do drive the suv or take four cars. Not everyone who drives suv do so to show off some do so becasue it takes less gas than anyting else. The question may be mote. So manyare trading thier suv%26#039;s in for smaller cars or trucks. I work a little over 7 miles away 4 days a week. I can%26#039;t carpool cause nobody else I work with comes from my way. I have ridden my bike, but that takes a while, and it%26#039;s not that realistic to do everyday, I%26#039;d get sweaty, it could rain, I sometimes have to get somewhere right after work.

I have a small car, so it is good on gas. I just wonder what people are going to do as gas prices increase? Will you just cut back on spending in other areas? Do you think prices will ever go back down?
How can you save on gas?
my radio station gives 100 dollars of gas every 3rd person that calls.

I always call!

:D
How can you save on gas?
-don%26#039;t tailgate

-don%26#039;t speed

-don%26#039;t run up to a red light then stop

-don%26#039;t burst forward after the light turns green
Reply:There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

(1) spark plugs

(2) spark plug wires

(3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

(4) new air filter

(5) PCV

(6) correct tire pressure

(7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

(8) spray clean MAF sensor.

===

Forget all those %26quot;SAVE GAS%26quot; scams. This was on NBC morning TV show. The difference is as much as 38% (their claim). There are very simple rules to save gas:

(1) drive slow - not too much past 55

(2) accelerate slowly

(3) don%26#039;t brake unnecessarily

(4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don%26#039;t coast - it is NOT safe and it does NOT save gas.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic). That%26#039;s 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles). Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

WOW !!

Good Luck...
Reply:Drive at or a bit below the speed limit, turn off the car if you%26#039;re in a jam, roll down the windows instead of using the A/C, etc.
Reply:buy yourself a bike!
Reply:You are already doing a great job. I drive for a living so it is harder for me.
Reply:Switch to vegetable oil. That way you can pick up spare oil from local fast food places. In most cases it%26#039;s free. =]

Converting takes a lot of money and patience though.

I%26#039;d say carpool but you clarified it as not being an option.

Good Luck.
Reply:A price drop in the near future is unlikely. Unless the dollar gets stronger and OPEC loosens up, just get used to the $4 gas. But there is a trick I%26#039;ve learned that saves me some gas. On the roads that I need to travel, I drive exactly the speed limit and pretty much just keep feather pressure on the throttle to maintain my speed and have it drop ever so slowly. Should save you a few bucks every week.
Reply:Do what i did, i bought a motor scooter/bike. it gets 125 mpg. Or if you want to avoid gas all together check out electric bikes. i know there is one at walmart for 350$. it should pay for itself the first couple times.
Reply:1. Prices will fluctuate, but never go back down to a level they were 1, 3, or 5 years ago. They will, however, continue to go up.

2. You need your car for work. Nothing you can do about it. You just need to be careful to drive to the speedlimit, not over rev your car, shift early if its a manual or dont use full throttle if its auto.

3. To compensate for the high fuel prices, we are going out less, eating takeaway less and shopping in Aldi or IGA insted of Coles as they are cheaper, We also only buy meat when it is on special, and look for specials when we shop.
Reply:Hybrids =)
Reply:Prices may go back down but not by much. And that is only relevant as to how high it gets. As far as solutions you named some good ones in your question.
Reply:i have slowed down from driving 70-80 mph to 45-55 mph, scheduled my grocery trips to coincide with coming home from work..... eliminated single destination trips as much as possible....

seriously considering carpooling......emptied out all extra junk from car to reduce weight......

so far my gas consumption has reduced by about 20% ..... mostly from the driving slower, no more rabbit starts and being content to accellerate at about the same rate as a big rig.... Good grief.
Reply:Yep, things like that are getting said, but then again with the market the way it is right now, it could do anything.

Let this be a lesson, start learning to conserve now.

Cold air intake, headers, high flow exhaust?

does an cold air intake, headers, and high flow exhaust get u better fuel milage if you can keep your foot out of it?
Cold air intake, headers, high flow exhaust?
Oh yes.

I have those and it bumps the MPG little bit more than before.

===

There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

(1) spark plugs

(2) spark plug wires

(3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

(4) new air filter

(5) PCV

(6) correct tire pressure

(7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

(8) spray clean MAF sensor.

===

Good Luck...
Cold air intake, headers, high flow exhaust?
yes they do..... if your car is under warranty, the high flow exhaust is possiblly the only one you can install without voiding the warranty.....

everything from the O2 sensors forward that is altered or changed will void your warranty... Even the kids will love it/.
Let%26#039;s stop and think-We need to drill here at home?
That is a bad idea.

First you have to know that almost all our oil comes from CANADA and MEXICO. But that does not matter as the oil market is international.

Second, no matter how much oil we drill we will find way to waste it all. So increasing supply does not work. And we already have too much pollution and global warming. So that%26#039;s almost like pissing in your own bath water for an emergency.

The long term answer is to lower demand (by going alternative fuel and conservation).

Sorry to disappoint.

===

Another thing you should know is that the oil prices started to rise because our (USA) economy was weak (weak economy = weak dollar). But almost all the latest rise in crude prices (from about $100 to $140) are due to WALL STREET SPECULATOR (wall street greed) - not the middle east.

===

But that does NOT mean we are powerless to do something. They charge $135.00 a barrel , for a profit of $133.00 per barrel ? In what part of this equation do the ignorant think that it is %26quot;big oil`s fault%26quot; for high gas prices ?? DRILL HERE ; DRILL NOW ; PAY LESS !
Reply:Yes ---- I heard a report today that if we drilled into our Alaskan Oil Reserves....we could pump %26amp; process a million barrels a day out of there.

Bill Clinton vetoed the idea back in 1995.

Obviously, the Oil is still there for the taking.

The only obstacle now is to convince the %26quot; Green Earth %26quot; extremists that unfortunately we may have to disrupt the nests of 9 owls if we do drill in Alaska.
Reply:If we told Saudis your on you own if Iran gets nukes they would drop the prices REAL quick and beg us to protect them like we did when Saddam Husein was in power
Reply:Well lets see if we were to domestically produce 1 million barrels more a day for example that would be 1 million less that we would have to import and we%26#039;d keep our money here in the US,but then again thats what I think and im not an elected official. Being non dependant in foreign oil by countries that dont really like us VS drilling and telling them to f..k off and not worring about some gnat or mouse that has 3 eyelashes vs 4 is important to me.

What's the strangest thing that's happened to you on public transportation?

Just curious. Another one would be when this drunk guy came stumbling in and jumped the next carriage while the train was moving, luckily he made it. I have loads more stories on trains and I rarely travel on them! The train line I travel on has loads of weird people on it...
Reply:A few years ago I was on a bus during a blizzard. It took 3 hours to go 8 miles.

I let this woman use my phone to call her kids and tell them to go to a neighbors house as she was stuck in the blizzard.

30 minutes later my phone rings, a guy in an angry tone says, %26quot;Who is this?%26quot; I said I think you have the wrong number. First time stopped was because a suspected criminal on the loose was on the bus. Apparently, he had just robbed someone on the streets. When the police got on the bus, he made a quick dash through the rear door. Of course, he didn%26#039;t get far before he was caught! The second time, a drunk homeless person made a scene that he had the right to occupy two seats cuz he was disabled. Bus driver called the police when he tried to fight him. 3rd time was when another homeless person refused to get off the bus even though his belongings in his garbage bag smelled so bad and ants were crawling out. The bus driver had to called the police again to escort him off. This was on a rainy night one winter.. As you can imagine, practically the whole bus was full of homeless people riding up and down cuz I heard the shelters were full. I had to stand all the way and delt with this along with a few %26quot;normal%26quot; people.. =(
Reply:I remember I was drunk and took the community bus back home and puked over some poor old ladies Food shopping and the bus driver drove the bus to my house got me inside and raided my cupboards for cleaning agents for his bus, demanding that I clear it up - something that i was incapable of doing!

Whooops

What do I do if I want my road re-paved?

What%26#039;s the process? It%26#039;s a no no.
Reply:in Los Angeles if its before the front tire its okay

but if your tire is in the red zone then its a ticket)

now why in the first place did you park near a red zone ?

Have you cut down on outings because of gas?

I know we can%26#039;t get out and go like we use to because of the high cost of gas. We have to watch where every penny goes.

Everytime we get ahead the gas goes up again so we are really no farther ahead.
Have you cut down on outings because of gas?
Yes

I had a hot date the other night, but I ate 5 bean burritos for dinner beforehand, and well, I had to stay away from her...too much gas

ha haha
Have you cut down on outings because of gas?
yeah we no longer fill our boats at the dock, last weekend it was $5.86 a gallon. So instead of buying the beer for everyone like we usually do it%26#039;s now bring your own ;)

lake pirate 6%
Reply:only losers with no friends do that
Reply:No. I haven%26#039;t really changed all that much. I live beneath my means, so I%26#039;ve been able to take the hit with relative ease.

Gas prices have doubled in the last year. My wife and I go through about 60 gallons of gas a month. We don%26#039;t have any big SUVs or trucks. So that%26#039;s about $120 more per month compared to last year. Not a big bite out of our budget.

I guess we%26#039;re saving money a bit less.
