gas prices seem to be going up each week. They say it could reach $5 a gallon by The 4th of july!!! Ughh!! How are you handling the high gas prices? and how much is it in your area right now?

Right now in Lemoore, CA it is up to $4.45 ( cheapest in town so far).

Reply:It%26#039;s nothing new, it%26#039;s called price fixing. Oil companies do it, in order to stop it, the government has to investigate it and proove it%26#039;s being done. There are alot of rumors as to why this is going on and it%26#039;s simple as that. There is not shortage, or Bush having an impact, it%26#039;s really just basic economics of supply and demand.

I want to take a bus from Clearwater, FL to Scranton, PA. The site said the ticket would cost $164.00. I%26#039;d have to take about 13 buses to get to Scranton.

Questions

-Do I have to pair another fair when I get on each bus?

-When each bus stops, where does it stop at? (bus stop? bus station?)

- I%26#039;m 15, could I travel alone?

-Do the buses travel all night?

-Does it cost money to store your luggage on the bus?

Many years ago I traveled from Arizona to Boston. They would kick us off at night for a while until they cleaned the bus!!! I did not have any problem getting on the right bus. They made it really clear. In any event, keep an eye on your fellow passengers. Some are likely to be going where you are going or even beyond. You can either watch them or ask anybody who seems normal. Ask the bus driver or other Greyhound rep if you are at all unsure. It is their job to answer questions like yours.

I have a 2008 Ford Mustang GT manual. I want to know if driving the same speed in 5th gear with lower rpms will save me gas vs driving in 4th gear at higher rpms? Also, does driving in 4th and 5th gear constantly at lower rpms negatively affect my engine in any way?

Reply:For the best gas mileage, always drive in the highest gear possible. If you can use your top (highest) gear at 60 (without losing speed or stalling), that%26#039;s better than any other. The only reason to use a lower gear is for acceleration or maintaining speed up a hill.

Everybody has a price. It costs me $400 a month just to go to work 20 miles away. I cannot imagine spending that plus my free time for volunteer work. I%26#039;ll do local (5mi. range or less).

Sorry, but my wallet isn%26#039;t as big as my heart.
Reply:I would say yes. I stopped volunteering at our library when my baby was born with the intentions of going back when he was older and could behave himself while I was there. :)

Unfortunately, it just doesn%26#039;t make sense to go anywhere that isn%26#039;t necessary at this point. There are people who live in town that are closer and hopefully someone who could bike or walk would like to do this.

But current gas prices, unfortunately, just make it unwise for me to take on anything to where I don%26#039;t get paid :( I might consider public transit if it were convenient, but the summer heat doesn%26#039;t make that a smart idea either if there%26#039;s a lot of walking involved.

Most of the problem is force of habit, esp. in the South where everyone drives like important jerks. Drive at the same speed as the majority of traffic before there is an accident. You can%26#039;t be %26quot;pushed%26quot; to their speed, their option is to overtake you, make it easy, don%26#039;t travel too slow!

That%26#039;s when the problems really start, when vehicles change lanes to overtake, after they are forced to slow down by someone travelling slow. They then can obstruct the driver doing 70 already, a dangerous situation all round. Even for you, stubbornly sticking below a speed limit.

It%26#039;s called self- preservation. Make things equal, so far as possible.

I have driven 18 wheelers for 10+ years. I know exactly what you are talking about. And I almost always do the exact same thing. It helps traffic to move along by merging earlier rather than waiting till the last second and shooting in...I guess I feel a lot safer doing it while the other cars are 60 feet behind me. And yes people are crazy behind the wheel.

yep, I suspect everyone who has driven has experienced this selfish behavior. These people are cut from the same cloth as those who dash through intersections or continue with a left turn in front of traffic even after their light has turned red. It makes a person want to drive a tank just to teach them their lesson.

That is okay with me, I think it%26#039;s expected. It ticks me off to see people trying to merge earlier because they have to slow right down to merge, and chances are its heavy traffic in the ending lane as well, so it gets backed up to the point that the traffic light is green, but people can%26#039;t go through. Use the whole of the ending lane so that people way at the back of the ending lane can keep moving.

Or do you mean you%26#039;re trying to exit the highway, and people keep cutting infront of you? That%26#039;s just plain rude and I hope you don%26#039;t let them in...

Reply:You may have to do some conversion here, but in Southern Ontario (canada) we are being charged around 1.35 a litre. From what I hear this is much more expensive than just over the border (buffalo)... but its not close enough to be worth the drive for me :(

The same brand of gas was selling for $3.99 this morning and now it is selling for $4.01. How do you explain this? This is in Ipswich Ma. They are both gulf stations, but the tanker that brings the gas is the same one that goes to all the other stations. Did I miss something? I must have.

there are all types of biofuel. b5,b10,b20. and so on. then there is things like e85 wich is a form of biofuel as well. If you are talking about diesel bio then it depends on the mix percentage, and were you get it (store bought vs. homemade). biodiesel can be anywere from free to $5.00+ a gallon.

I paid 4.01 today and that was full service..

100 degree weather....I wasn%26#039;t pumping to save a penny for self serve which was 4.03-4.08. Shhhhoot.....Full service will be more popular if the difference in price is pennies...

im from Southern California. we only have self serve gasoline stations here pretty much, only seen like one full service place. Regular gas is at $4.83/gal already, i put premium in one of my cars and it costs $5/gal. So to answer your question which regular gas reach $5? yes it will. In fact i%26#039;ve already seen it at some stations, REGULAR for $5 a gallon. In my area it will probably be up to $5 for regular in the next 2 weeks. It%26#039;s about a 10 cent increase every week here.

$5 a gallon will probably come to your area sooner or later. It%26#039;s basically here for us Southern Cali residents.

I already notice my usually packed socal commutes are becoming less packed because more people are now in the car pool lanes car pooling with cars full of people. There%26#039;s more people waiting at the bus stop around the corner of my street too.

I flew to Ontario to visit family last October and rented an S.U.V.................this year I will be visiting fewer family members or have them all at one location, and rent a smaller and more fuel efficient vehicle. Sometimes, though, you just have to spend the extra $$$ to do those important things.

I saw an all electric scooter a few weeks ago....very quiet, and you plug it in to recharge it...........that%26#039;s very COOL!

If I weren%26#039;t almost 8 months pregnant, I%26#039;d be walking for sure! Plus I also live an hour from my friends, family and church, so I can%26#039;t really go without driving.

I used to manage a driveway service fuel station.

We had to close down, as we couldnt compete with the larger fuel stations.

Every fuel station in our town is now affiliated with a Supermarket, or ran by a Supermarket and offer discounts. The most common one is Woolworths, who offer you 4c a litre discount on fuel when you spend over $50 at their supermarket, but the other supermarkets, Coles, Bilo and IGA/Richies have similar deals with other service stations.

There is a small service station next door to a Woolworths service station, who offers full driveway service and is usally the same price, and often cheaper, however people line up at Woolworths for their %26#039;discount%26#039;

There was one instance when the independant servo was 5c a liter cheaper than Woolworths, and within 30mins, Woolies dropped their price to be cheaper than him.

We%26#039;re currently paying around $1.50 - $1.60 per liter, which is around $5.50 - $6.00 per gallon.

It%26#039;s how your brain reacts to a lower a price at first glance. 3.9 is picked up as 3 cents instead of 4 cents. The gas companies should do away with the 1/10 cent reading and figure this in as part of the highway tax. and let the gallon read as a full number (example $4.00, $4.15 and $4.30).

No its not. Maybe in England, but not here in America. Gasoline goes up by only $1 - $1.50 max year after year. A $2 increase would be a big difference. If gas went up to $11 a gallon by January the U.S. economy would be ruined, pretty much all the middle class would not be able to afford gasoline. $11 An hour is more than many people make in an hour. Since the Middle class makes up the majority, it will never happen. If gas ever gets up to $11 a gallon, we%26#039;ll see a rapid change in the cars we drive. Nobody would be driving a gasoline powered car, everyone would be driving a fuel cell/hydrogen car or a hybrid at the least. I don%26#039;t see that shift happening in the next 6 months. Gasoline maybe at $6-7 a gallon by Jan, but not $11. Many people are writing absurd things, like how gas is gonna be $11 a gallon by next summer, or in your case Jan., it won%26#039;t happen, if it did we would all be really screwed. I know i would only be to afford only 1 of our 4 cars if gas was $11.

OMG! soon we are gonna have to be all driving in little scooters to work, we are going to look like thailand or something like that... Funny, i guess we are going down slowly... and crash....

Gasoline is not the answer, cars have been running off of this stuff since , since, lets say 1910.

The higher the potency of gasoline the better millage I can get from it.

Lets spend some more monies on E-85 so my millage per tank goes down 50%.

It%26#039;s hard to save on gas where I live just because I have to drive to work. I work a little over 7 miles away 4 days a week. I can%26#039;t carpool cause nobody else I work with comes from my way. I have ridden my bike, but that takes a while, and it%26#039;s not that realistic to do everyday, I%26#039;d get sweaty, it could rain, I sometimes have to get somewhere right after work.

I have a small car, so it is good on gas. I just wonder what people are going to do as gas prices increase? Will you just cut back on spending in other areas? Do you think prices will ever go back down?

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic). That%26#039;s 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles). Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

Reply:A price drop in the near future is unlikely. Unless the dollar gets stronger and OPEC loosens up, just get used to the $4 gas. But there is a trick I%26#039;ve learned that saves me some gas. On the roads that I need to travel, I drive exactly the speed limit and pretty much just keep feather pressure on the throttle to maintain my speed and have it drop ever so slowly. Should save you a few bucks every week.

2. You need your car for work. Nothing you can do about it. You just need to be careful to drive to the speedlimit, not over rev your car, shift early if its a manual or dont use full throttle if its auto.

3. To compensate for the high fuel prices, we are going out less, eating takeaway less and shopping in Aldi or IGA insted of Coles as they are cheaper, We also only buy meat when it is on special, and look for specials when we shop.

so far my gas consumption has reduced by about 20% ..... mostly from the driving slower, no more rabbit starts and being content to accellerate at about the same rate as a big rig.... (low but steady)

Cold air intake, headers, high flow exhaust?
yes they do..... if your car is under warranty, the high flow exhaust is possiblly the only one you can install without voiding the warranty.....

everything from the O2 sensors forward that is altered or changed will void your warranty... (FORD) other mfgs may differ...

for the cost do they pay for themselves... not likely....but the extra performance and cool sounds make driving lots of fun...

That is a bad idea.

First you have to know that almost all our oil comes from CANADA and MEXICO. But that does not matter as the oil market is international.

Second, no matter how much oil we drill we will find way to waste it all. So increasing supply does not work. And we already have too much pollution and global warming. So that%26#039;s almost like pissing in your own bath water for an emergency.

The long term answer is to lower demand (by going alternative fuel and conservation).

Another thing you should know is that the oil prices started to rise because our (USA) economy was weak (weak economy = weak dollar). But almost all the latest rise in crude prices (from about $100 to $140) are due to WALL STREET SPECULATOR (wall street greed) - not the middle east.

(2) spark plug wires

(3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

(7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

(8) spray clean MAF sensor.

(1) drive slow - not too much past 55

(2) accelerate slowly

Don%26#039;t coast - it is NOT safe and it does NOT save gas.

First time stopped was because a suspected criminal on the loose was on the bus. Apparently, he had just robbed someone on the streets. The second time, a drunk homeless person made a scene that he had the right to occupy two seats cuz he was disabled. The bus driver had to called the police again to escort him off. This was on a rainy night one winter.. Ive been looking a bike called the Downtube and possibly a Dahon but they seem a little large for the bus? Need it for longer journeys too. The Downtbe is cheaper and seem pretty good... just don%26#039;t know if it is suitable for the bus!!

I know we can%26#039;t get out and go like we use to because of the high cost of gas. We have to watch where every penny goes.

Everytime we get ahead the gas goes up again so we are really no farther ahead.

Gas prices have doubled in the last year. My wife and I go through about 60 gallons of gas a month. We don%26#039;t have any big SUVs or trucks. So that%26#039;s about $120 more per month compared to last year. Not a big bite out of our budget.

I guess we%26#039;re saving money a bit less.
